Tell me about the woman behind the brand
Nakia: Well, I was born in New York City and now reside in the D.C. metro area but not before experiencing life as a Jersey girl and then a ‘Baltimorean’. When I was little, I tap-danced at the Avery Fisher Hall, part of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts complex. I attended the Barbizon School of Modeling & Acting and later became represented by the John Robert Powers New York agency for acting. Later in life, I decided to get my makeup artist certification. I’m now on a quest to enhance my photography skills and recently I dabbled in fashion design. With all of the many hats I wear, I’m really just a down to earth girl that loves all things CHIC!
What inspired you to create Mz Mahogany Chic?
Nakia: My best ideas usually start with a sheet of college ruled paper. It’s something about those two blue lines surrounding a blank space that spark my creative vision. My love of fashion and beauty consumed my life so much that I had to write about it.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
Nakia: Most recently, I was nominated and awarded the 2013 Emerging Media Member for Fashion Awards MD. The ongoing mission of Fashion Awards MD is to highlight, celebrate and recognize the talents of those who have made contributions to the fashion industry in the state of Maryland and beyond.
A fashion award is amazing. How did it feel to win?
Nakia: There were over 11,000 nominations in the categories. When I was announced as a final nominee, sharing the ballot with only 4 others in the Emerging Media Member category, it was truly an honor. At the award show, I was super nervous waiting to hear if I won. My heart just stopped when I heard my name. I walked up to the stage, accepted the teardrop shaped award presented by Brandi Proctor of FOX 45 TV, and claimed my title as 2013 Emerging Media Member! I am so proud of the Mz Mahogany Chic team for making our magazine CHIC. I am so thankful for having an awesome mom who encourages me to reach beyond my potential. I hope my experiences help me to be a role model for my little sister and build a stronger bond with my older brother.
What is your favorite fashion trend at the moment?
Nakia: The monochrome trend is definitely my fav. And it has been for a while. When Gwen Stefani came out with her L.A.M.B handbag collection and released the black & white checkered Mandeville Satchel from the SS 2008 Collection, I fell in love. I still wear it till this day.
